The Road to Find Out: A Modern Pilgrim & the Camino de Santiago

About:  The Road to Find Out follows the author along the Camino de Santiago – a medieval, pilgrimage route through northern Spain. Although little known to most Americans, walking “the Camino” has gained significant popularity since its “rebirth” in the 1980’s. Historically, those on the Camino journeyed to the resting place of St. James for religious reasons – for them, the trip was a solemn pilgrimage – they were pilgrims. Today, people have a variety of motivations for heading out on the “Way of St. James,” but for most, the walk is still a form of pilgrimage, as the introduction explains — “We were looking for something. We were on the way to find rest for our souls. We were on the road to find out.”

This book, then, is not only about the people, places and things experienced over thirty days and 500 miles, but is about Bruce’s observations and reflections about the spiritual aspects of such a journey— about the path life has taken, about the road not traveled, and about the trail up ahead.

The Race Before Us: A Journey of Running & Faith

About: The Race Before Us is a very personal memoir that explores Bruce’s questions and doubts about the Christian faith while simultaneously dealing with physical health challenges.  Bruce takes the reader through his effort to try to regain the physical vitality of earlier days by starting a running regime.  Ultimately, with the assistance of coaches training teams and running buddies, he is able to go from an inability to run more than a mile to completely the New York City Marathon eleven months later.  The book is also a primer in apologetics as Bruce discusses and ultimately embraces the various arguments that demonstrate the reasonableness and truth of Christianity.

The History of Hermitage Country Club:  The First 100 Years

About:  As its name indicates, The History of Hermitage Country Club traces the first 100 years of this golf club’s history – from its simple nine-hole course in downtown Richmond to its 18-hole Tillinghast  design on Hilliard Road, north of the city in Henrico County to its move west to Goochland County and the development of 36 holes of golf.  This definitive history includes the club’s highs and lows from almost failing (more than once)  to staging the only golf major played in Virginia (the 1949 PGA won by Sam Snead) to hosting some of the earliest rounds of the “Senior Tour (including Arnold Palmer’s last professional tournament win).
